Luciano/Junior Reed and more Japan Tribute-video

April 29th, 2011 | By

‘Starting Over’ and ‘Matsushima’ are the latest efforts by Japanese natives living in Jamaica, Jun Tochino and Yumiko ‘Yumi’ Gabe, to aid in disaster relief funds for victims of the March 11 earthquake and tsunami.

Starting Over, which has a ska sound, was written by international reggae artistes Triston Palmer, Luciano and features them along with several popular veteran reggae acts such as Bunny Wailer, Carl Dawkins, Coco Tea, John Holt, Josey Wales, Junior Reid, Half Pint, Ken Boothe, Little John, Marcia Griffiths, Pinchers, Tabby Diamond, U-Roy, Yellowman, Fiona Robinson-Sterling, Nicole Bud and Althea Layne-Hamilton.

Star Creation Music, Roaring Lion Studio, Grafton Studio and Tuff Gong Studio are the studios which were used to complete the tracks.

According to Yumi, Matsushima is more of an instrumental (rhythm) inspired by the Japanese folk song and place of the same name. It was done by saxophonist Dean Fraser with vocals being added by Japanese artistes Nao-san and Mr Bon.

Yumi said the songs should be available on iTunes by the end of the week.

The video for Starting Over was also done last week by Hiroki Sugino, Shinya Miyazaki and others of High Rock Film from Japan, who were in Jamaica doing a documentary about Rastafarians.

All the proceeds will go to the Japanese Red Cross.

“We helping in two ways, financially and mentally by inspiring them. We really appreciate the musicians for coming together to help,” said Yumi.

The two also recently linked with Junior Reid to host Japanese Thursdays at his Eastwood Park Road nightclub.

Kartel releases statement concerning gun lyrics and spliced tune

April 26th, 2011 | By

Vybz Kartel issued a release this morning, stating that he will no longer be doing ‘gun lyrics’.

He also countered claims that he sang about oral sex in a recent song, stating that the audio clip being spread on the Internet was altered.

Vybz Kartel’s release:

As of this moment i will no longer be doing “gun lyrics”. I did a song called “bad up u mada” VYBZ KARTEL – BAD UP U MADA (GAZA WORLD RIDDIM)and every one and their mada(lol) counteracted it.tryin to get their already expired 15 minutes of fame. Well i got news for them. Theyre at war with themselves, cause i aint givin them the time of day…hush y’all insects and parasites.”With that being said, the record must show that 1)’Big bad and brave’. 2)’duppy know who fi frighten’ and 3)’clap it upVybz Kartel – Clap It (Buss Mi Gun Proud) {PREVIEW} April 2011 [Adidjahiem Rec] were all released earlier this month just in case people hear them and think im going against my word.I guess i must be twitter, because everybody followin’ me.

(RE: A SPLICE SONG ON THE INTERNET WHERE MY VOICE IS ALTERED TO SAY “ME WANT KISS U PON DA P* JAW DEH”) … I should not even be dignifying those allegations with a statement but since it is the politically correct thing to do, so be it. This attempt by these malicious and vindictive persons who seek to defame my character is as futile as trying to dethrone the dancehall hero from the pinnacle of the genre … try something else that is more believable. Better luck next time haters.”

Here is a piece of the spliced version

JAMAICA tops medal count at CARIFTA 2O11

April 26th, 2011 | By

Jamaica again topped the medal count of the 40th Carifta Games, which ended on Monday. The island of Olympian Usain Bolt ended up with 66 medals, six fewer than they captured last year in the Cayman Islands.

Jamaica led their under-17 girls 4x400m Relay with the athletes who had finished first and second in the flat 400-m.   They then turned it over to the girls who had finished first and second in the 300-m Hurdles.   It was therefore virtually a fait accompli when they crossed the line in 3:41.33, nearly three seconds ahead of Barbados. Aside from Jevaugn Minzie on the second leg, the boys had not had as much individual success, but their strength in depth gave them a split-second win over Trinidad & Tobago, 3:15.19 to 3:15.35.

The women’s 4×400-m relay held little surprise.   Jamaica’s current foursome, fabulous though they indubitably are, is probably not even the strongest quartet the Land of Wood and Water could deploy.   But the talents of Olivia James, Janieve Russell, Simoya Campbell and Chris Ann Gordon were sufficient to run their team to 3:31.47, beating Trinidad & Tobago by over eight seconds and eclipsing the mark of 3:31.90 established in 2006 by the team of Sherene Pinnock, Kaliese Spencer, Bobby-Gaye Wilkins and Sonita Sutherland.

The Jamaicans had expressed their concern about Trinidad & Tobago in the men’s 4x400m, and the foursome of Jareem Richards, Hendrix Foncette, Deon Lendore and Darvin Sandy did indeed best their Jamaican counterparts.

Trinidad & Tobago was second with 33 medals, down 40 from 2010 while Barbados got 28 including nine gold, eight silver and 11 bronze.

The Bahamas improved to a total of 31.

Genard Paul leaped 7.19m for Grenada’s first gold.

A total of 18 territories came away from these Games with at least one medal.

Bermuda will host the 2012 CARIFTA Games with the British Virgin Islands also preparing a bid for 2014.
