18 year old Kirani James wins Grenadas first gold on World Stage

August 30th, 2011 | By

DHU sports has kept a keen eye on young up and coming track star Kirani James for quite some time now and today the Greenz youth set the world ablaze as he took home the title of 400m World Champion.

Timing his effort to perfection James refused to panic when Merritt took the lead on the top bend: “My aim was to stay as relaxed as possible, follow my plan and finish strongly,” he said.

For the tiny island of Grenada it has been described as a seismic shift.  The highest any athlete from the island had finished in the World Championships was when Alleyne Francique came in sixth in the same event in 2001 and 2003.

Comparisons to Usain Bolt have been inescapable for young James since he stepped on the scene.  At 16 Usain Bolt ran the 400m in 45.35 and the world was wowed, but when James attacked the distance at the same age, he was a full tenth of a second faster, clocking 45.24.  Now, at the age of 18 years  he was proclaimed World champion.  Bolt was 22 before he won his first senior World gold.

James is the ninth athlete in the history of the sport to win World youth, junior and now senior titles.

Ironically Kirani is not the most talented of the James brothers.  Albert Joseph, James’ first coach insists that his elder brother Gary was far more talented: “He was a huge inspiration to me,” Kirani spoke of him. “But he was good at about 20 sports…”

Evidence of Kirani’s humble character and cool head came after the Daegu final when James refused to be drawn in about his chances for the upcoming London Olympics: “It is too easy to say what is going to happen next year,” he said. “But I will only say it is going to be significant.

“But whatever happens, I am just happy to be representing my country and putting Grenada on the map. That’s the most important thing.”

Meanwhile, back home in his native town of Gouyave, it is carnival time: “It is also called the village that never sleeps,” said James with a huge smile. “Back home they’ll be going crazy.”

Yohan Blake Triumphant after Bolt Disqualified at World Championships

August 30th, 2011 | By

Yohan Blake triumphed in the 100 meters final winning in a time of 9.92 seconds after reigning champion Usain Bolt was astonishingly disqualified following a false start in the final at the IAAF World Championships in Daegu, South Korea Sunday morning.

Walter Dix of the United States was second in 10.08 seconds and Kim Collins of St Kitts third in 10.09 running in his ninth World Championships.

Nesta Carter of Jamaica was seventh in 10.95 seconds.

Blake described winning as a dream come true and went on to express his disappointment about training partner Usain Bolt’s DQ saying; he felt like he had to take it out in the race for him.

Tornado hits Guyana coast

People living in some areas along the East and West Coast of Dmerara viewed a unique whether phenomenon Tuesday, a waterspout or what appears to be a tornado.

The Ministry of Agriculture, responsible for hydro meteorology explained in a press release that a waterspout is a funnel which contains an intense vortex, sometimes destructive, of small horizontal extent occurring over a body of water.

“The belief that a waterspout is nothing more than a tornado over water is only partially true.  The fact is, depending on how they form, waterspouts come in two types: tornadic and non tornadic (fair weather).”

The release went on to say that tornadic waterspouts generally begin as true tornadoes over land in association with a thunderstorm, and then move out over the water.

“They can be large and are capable of considerable destruction. Fair weather waterspouts, on the other hand, form only over open water. They develop at the surface of the water and climb skyward in association with warm water temperatures and high humidity in the lowest several thousand feet of the atmosphere. They are usually small, relatively brief, and less dangerous. The non tornadic variety of waterspout is much more common than the tornadic.”

As far as Tuesday’s waterspout the Ministry considers it to be non-tornadic in nature.  This type of waterspout is formed over water initially due to warm temperatures in the lower atmosphere along with high humidity.

“Fair weather waterspouts are generally not as dangerous and are more common than tornadic waterspouts. However, fishermen and people who live near larger bodies of water should exercise caution as current meteorological conditions may support similar type water spout to develop occasionally,” the Ministry said.

“The sightings of waterspouts are considered to be rare in this part of the tropics but with the right meteorological conditions in the atmosphere there is always a chance that one can develop.  Waterspouts are more common in tropical Australia, Europe and some parts of the United States,” the Ministry said.

Aidonia and entourage accused of attacking ZIP FM dj Wah-Wa

August 22nd, 2011 | By

ZipFM disc jockey Wah-Wa received 12 stitches and 3 injections following a scuffle over the weekend outside a popular New Kingston nightclub.  Wah- Wa is alledging that Aidonia and his entourage attacked him in the parking lot beating him over the head with bottles of Guinness.

When asked whether or not he reported the incident to police, Wah- Wa said yes although he reported the altercation to police, he did not press charges.   He did indicate however, that he wanted the numerous death threats he received from the artist and his associates to go on record.

Police followed up by giving Aidonia a warning letting him know that they are aware of the situation and will prosecute if anything happens to the ZIPFM selector in the near future.

As far as what caused the brawl Wah-Wa says some men in Aidonia’s entourage initially approached him complaining that he plays too much Kartel and don’t run enough of Aidonia’s music .

Wah-Wa also noted that the men said that he used to link the JOP artist and them in the past but hasn’t reached out to the camp in recent times.   But Wah-Wa says he told everybody including Aidonia;

” Music mi get paid to play and mi is a musician so mi play music…and Vybz Kartel a one of the hottest artist right now inna Jamaica..Mi have to play Vybz Kartel song dem….I play Vybz Kartel I play Mavado I play everybody song….and you a go disrespect mi because I play Vybz Kartel song.   A joke ting.

Meanwhile Aidonia and his reps have yet to make an official public statement regarding the incident.
