Police Charge Kartel with Murder

October 3rd, 2011 | By

Investigators with the Major Investigations Task Force have charged controversial dancehall deejay Vybz Kartel with murder, conspiracy to murder and possession of a firearm.

The additional charges came after the artist was subjected to a lengthy interrogation by MIT detectives this afternoon.

According to a news release that police made available Monday evening;

“The allegation is that on Monday, July 11, 2011, Palmer, along with other men, conspired to murder Barrington Burton o/c ‘Bossie’, a 27-year-old businessman/promoter of a Gregory Park address in St Catherine. Burton was murdered while he was standing with friends along Walkers Avenue in Gregory Park.”

A preliminary hearing will take place on Tuesday at the Half Way Tree Resident Magistrate’s Court.

Kartel was taken into police custody over the weekend after police raided a Kingston hotel he was staying at with some associates.

The deejay was initially slapped with possession of ganja charges, but police continued to implicate that there was a larger investigation surrounding the artist being conducted.  Police Force officials then escorted the deejay from one property to another searching and confiscating various items from his homes.

TnT State of Emergency Continues

October 3rd, 2011 | By

The government in Trinidad and Tobago is currently reviewing the 11 p.m. to 4 a.m. curfew in the country again.

T&T National Security Minister John Sandy said last Wednesday that the National Security Council met to discuss the curfew which has been in place in the Twin islands since late August.

Sandy said the curfew has been constantly under review and “There is the possibility it could even be removed.”

When asked if there had been an increase in domestic violence incidents since the State of Emergency, Sandy said it was the decrease in other major violent crimes gave the impression there was an increase in domestic violence.

The Trinidad and Tobago Police Service last week indicated that during the 24 hours between 8:00 am on September 27th, 2011 to 8:00 am on September 28th 2011 a total of 29 persons were arrested.

This number brings the total number of arrests made from August 23, 2011 to September 28, 2011 to 3,290.

Many T&T residents however have been documenting their perspective of the ongoing SOE on local radio and via the Internet as several songs and video blogs have emerged reflecting the civilian perspective of the current 11am-4pm curfew.

One such song remixes the popular Laza Morgan and Mavado smash hit One by One.  The humorous remix produced by Foreign Dan has been getting significant airplay on local radio stations like 96.7 FM.

Kartel remains in police custody

October 3rd, 2011 | By

Vybz Kartel was taken into police custody over the weekend.

The artist along with 3 other persons were picked up from a Kingston hotel Friday morning and charged with possession of ganja.   Kartel’s attorney has stated however that, “the ganja found in the hotel cannot be linked to the deejay as there were other persons who had access to the room at that time.”

The deejay was then handcuffed as police whisked him to various Kingston and Portmore properties he is reported to frequent.  At each location the police brought the deejay inside the premises before conducting the search and confiscating various items.

The Assistant Commissioner wouldn’t go into much detail as to how long the deejay would be behind bars; “we want to say we’re holding him on the ganja charges” but he stressed “it is part of a larger investigation.”

The artist remains in police custody and was reported to be scheduled for interrogation by The Flying Squad earlier this afternoon.

Two of the 3 persons arrested with the deejay will face the Corporate Area Resident Magistrate Court tomorrow while the 3rd person will answer to charges this Friday October 7th.
