Machel Montano retained his crown at the 2012 staging of Digicel’s International Soca Monarch Competition Saturday morning at the Hasely Crawford Stadium in Port of Spain.
Montano’s highly anticipated Power performance seemed lackluster compared to the forward received by crowd favorite Iwer George until that is Machel strapped a jet powered contraption on his back and literally flew off stage for his exit.
The Hasely Crawford Stadium could only look over head or watch the huge monitors in amazement before Montano disappeared from view.
Machel also took the crown for his colorful and over top performance of Mr. Fete in the Groovy segment where he brought out Calypso Rose hailing her “Mrs. Fete… the mummy of the nation.”
The results had to be announced the next day as the event went over time allowances coming into the morning which resulted in authorities pulling the plug on the show before the results could be revealed.
Destra, Kes, Benjai, and Blaxx all gave strong performances as well which reflected in the results.
Although the show was being touted as the absolute “best Soca Monarch competition ever” by announcers the absence of heavy hitters Bunji and Fay Ann seemed to be felt as the show left the viewers wanting more of the usual edge.
The song entitled Kentucky from Hard Knox from Antigua didn’t seem to help matters as they rolled out an over grown KFC box onstage which would sit behind the deejay for his entire set.
Knox’s performance was was accompanied by a man in a chicken suit and a slew of dancers who clucked and danced along to what appeared to be more of an extended KFC plug in the guise of a competing song than anything else.
However it was the the final performer Prophet Benjamin dubbed the most conscious artist of the night who came out and turned things back up with his comical yet sizzling hot set for his hit Throw Wine.
